Emissions
Mashu are continually looking at how to reduce their emissions further
throughout their production chain. Based in Athens, Greece, Mashu choose to manufacture the handbags, handles and other components locally to reduce emissions. Mashu prioritises using recycled materials and the most innovative fabrics, including recycled cotton, polyester, deadstock fabrics as well as plant-based leathers made from agricultural waste from Cactus and Pineapples. With every order placed, Mashu uses DHL carbon neutral shipping.
Circularity
Mashu designs bags with circularity and durability in mind. By using
recycled and deadstock materials, and plant-based leathers made from
agricultural waste, Mashu avoids the need to create excess fabrics and makes use of what already exists. The handles are all made from wooden offcuts from a furniture company in Greece that would otherwise be thrown or burned. All off-cuts are saved during production and are utilised for Mashu’s smaller accessories. Additionally, Mashu designs timeless and durable pieces with longevity in mind, hoping to reduce waste by being seasonless and not following passing trends. Bags that will stand the test of time, loved for years to come. Each order is sent in a fully recycled cardboard box and GOTS certified cotton dustbags.
Water Consumption
Animal leather is notorious for using high amounts of water to produce, as well as using harsh chemicals that can be polluting to water systems. By using Piñatex and Desserto – two plant-based leather alternatives made from Cactus and Pineapple waste, Mashu significantly reduce their water consumption. By using recycled cotton and polyester for the linings, Mashu eliminates the need to use water supplies to produce virgin materials.
Workers Rights
Mashu works with local artisans in Athens who put a lot of care and
passion into each item they make. It is the foundation of Mashu to produce in Greece, supporting traditional craft to create a positive impact in the community. Mashu believes the livelihoods of those who make the products is of highest importance and chooses to work with small, usually family run factories or individual artisans to build a healthier economy and supports the countries workforce.
